Waste Heat Reuse as a Decarbonization Pathway for Data Centres

Mr Richard Mills

Head of Design and Development

Data Centres at ESR

DATE AND TIME

9 July 2024, Monday | 11.30am – 12.30pm

Data centers are large consumers of electrical energy and operate 24/7s. More than 90% of the energy input ends up as waste heat.

By strategically locating data centers in areas with potential consumers of waste heat—such as farms, offices, factories, and homes—and providing the necessary infrastructure, waste heat reuse could significantly reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, this approach would decrease the amount of heat released into the atmosphere, thereby mitigating the urban heat island effect in cities.

This presentation will take a look at ways this heat could be captured, transported and used, contributing to our progress to a net-zero future.
