Coastal Protection – An Overview of Coastal Armour Development, Recent Innovation and New Approaches

Mr Yang Zi Qian

Managing Director
Delta Marine Consultants Singapore Pte Ltd

DATE AND TIME

8 July 2024, Monday | 10.00am – 11.00am

This presentation offers an overview of the evolution and significance of armor systems in coastal protection, tracing back to ancient times when rock was the primary material used for armoring revetment, breakwater, and dike structures. As our society expands and our coastal and maritime infrastructure extends into deeper waters, coupled with the challenges of climate change and rising sea levels, the need for enhanced wave protection has become critical, necessitating more effective and resilient armoring solutions.

The presentation offers an overview of coastal armor systems, exploring various armor types, designs, and maintenance aspects. It delves into key technical considerations and the development process involved in selecting and implementing armor solutions. Emphasis is placed on the importance of physical testing in validating coastal protection structures. A focal point of the presentation will be the XblocPlus system and its recent research development in Singapore, alongside other innovations that introduce additional multifunctionalities and sustainable utilities to coastal protection designs.
