The Institution of Engineers (IES)

Founded in July 1966, the Institution of Engineers, Singapore (IES) stands as the nation’s foremost professional society for engineers. As the premier engineering institution in Singapore, IES is a trusted advisor to the government, regularly providing expert feedback on key professional engineering matters.

IES plays a central role in the development of engineering talent in Singapore, with strong representation among faculty members at the nation’s leading engineering institutions. Through close collaboration with local universities and polytechnics, IES organises a wide array of courses, seminars, and talks to support the ongoing development of engineers and IES members, ensuring they remain at the forefront of the industry.

The Institution also maintains robust relationships with engineering organisations globally, including those in Australia, China, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States. As a proud representative of Singapore in prestigious international bodies such as the World Federation of Engineering Organisations (WFEO), ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO), and the Federation of Engineering Institutions of Asia and the Pacific (FEIAP), IES fosters global collaboration, goodwill, and fellowship among engineers worldwide.

A major milestone in IES’s history came in June 2006, when the Engineering Accreditation Board (EAB) achieved full signatory status in the Washington Accord (WA). Singapore became the first ASEAN nation to receive this honour, empowering IES to represent Singapore in the mutual recognition framework of the WA and to ensure the continuous quality of engineering education systems worldwide.

To further elevate the profession, IES has introduced several key initiatives, including the Chartered Engineering Registry, the World Engineers Summit, and National Engineers Day. These initiatives aim to raise technical competencies among engineers in Singapore and promote the value of engineering within the community.

IES remains committed to advancing the engineering profession and enhancing the recognition and status of engineers both locally and internationally. Through closer collaboration with stakeholders and continued contributions to society, IES will ensure that the engineering profession thrives, evolves, and receives the respect it deserves.
